American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Services for Medicaid-Eligible Clients

Interpreter services for Medicaid eligible clients can be requested through the Health Care Authority's (HCA's) current vendor Universal Language Service (Universal). Through the previous vendor contracted since 2012, access to interpretive services was limited by available interpreters, resulting in low fulfillment rates. Universal and the Health Care Authority are committed to addressing the workforce issue and increasing availability of these services.

Services will be covered by HCA if:

  • The client is an eligible Washington Apple Health (Medicaid) client; and

  • Services are an eligible Apple Health medical benefit; and

  • Services are provided by an authorized requester registered with Universal.

For more information on eligibility, request processes and more, see this announcement released by Health Care Authority on October 26.
